Organlegging nurse sold diseased corpsemeat for... →
An oral surgeon-turned-nurse-turned-organlegger has been busted in Philadelphia for buying corpses from funeral directors, extracting their valuable tissues, and selling them on to be used in surgery in the US and Canada:
Mastromarino, a former oral surgeon, paid funeral directors $1,000 per corpse, then sold the parts to tissue banks, Sagel said.
The body parts fetched up to $10,000 apiece,...

Kanye West, Man Of The Future [Kanye West] →
This is the fastest road vehicle in the world, the Acabion from designer Peter Maskus. It can go up to 342 mph and gets about 70 miles per gallon at 60 mph. I found it on Kanye West’s blog, where he posts futuristic (and super-expensive) toys almost every day. One day, it’ll be a self-cleaning kitchen that uses plants developed by the aerospace industry that produce water and vegetable...

“A teacher at a Tokyo school was arrested on Monday for making a group of boys undress at knifepoint and stealing their underpants, Kyodo news agency reported.”

Judge Says RIAA Should Be Fined For Bundling File... →
Years ago, before the RIAA’s decision to sue individual file sharers, the group used to send subpoenas to ISPs asking for IP addresses of users even though no lawsuit had actually been filed. Verizon actually stood up and fought the RIAA on this, eventually winning. In response, the RIAA started filing mass lawsuits, suing multiple “John Does” and then using those lawsuits to get...
USPTO Examiner Digs In Heels, Rejects 1-Click... →
theodp writes “Most corporations would be delighted to have their patent application assigned to the USPTO’s Mark Fadok. After all, this is the Primary Examiner who didn’t stop Amazon from patenting Blurbs or block Microsoft from patenting the Wish List. But Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’ 1-Click Patent - which Fadok has been rejecting since 2002 - is another matter. Why? Just...

Rich Kulawiec writes in to let us know about a ridiculous situation in Florida, that has some similarities to the ridiculous Julie Amero situation. Basically, a bunch of school officials and local newspaper folks are freaking out about the potential for students to access porn and are blaming the wrong people while displaying stunning levels of ignorance.
The basics of the situation are pretty...

There have been some claims that the recording industry’s investigative techniques may be illegal. While court cases alleging these techniques are illegal are still pending in the US, in Europe there seems to be a lot more support for the idea. In the Netherlands, for example, a court ruled that having ISPs hand over IP addresses to the recording industry would be a violation of privacy...

[Image: Panorama of Shanghai, courtesy of Siemens; view larger!]. EMI has announced that “unsold copies” of Rudebox, by British pop star Robbie Williams, “will soon be used to resurface Chinese roads.” More than a million copies of the CD “will be crushed and sent to the country to be recycled,” we read, where they “will be used in street lighting and road...
Al Gore Throws Hat Into The IPO Ring... →
While there’s still some speculation about an Al Gore run for the presidency, it appears he’s got bigger fish to fry, such as an IPO for his cable TV station Current Media. Honestly, it looks like a tough sell as an IPO. It’s not profitable. There are some serious questions about how viable a business it can be, and its “unique” angles, such as embracing the internet,...

The Cost Of The 21st Century War (So Far) →
This is kind of chilling:
The U.S. has suffered more than 72,000 battlefield casualties since the start of the war on terror in 2001, a Freedom of Information request has revealed.
…263,909 soldiers with experience of the two 21st-century wars have so far received treatment for everything from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to the aftermath of amputated limbs…
